Abstract

This article analyzes the Lithuanian American diaspora's efforts to secure U.S. recognition of Lithuania's independence from 1918 to 1922 through archival sources, press materials, and key scholarly works. Lithuanian Americans, deeply connected to their homeland, engaged in unofficial diplomacy, lobbying top U.S. officials, and promoting Lithuania's cause through organized demonstrations, media. and economic advocacy. Their efforts fostered awareness of Lithuania's struggle for recognition. However, despite mobilizing substantial public support, including a petition with one million signatures, their influence was overshadowed by the U.S. Government's focus on postwar European stability, the opposition to Bolshevism, and strategic alliances. President Wilson prioritized the preservation of Russian unity and President Harding awaited the resolution of Polish-Lithuanian territorial conflict and European consensus before recognizing Baltic countries' independence. The decision to recognize Lithuania in 1922 reflected an evolving international situation, economic interests, and the decline of anti-Bolshevik success rather than adherence to principles of self-determination. The article concludes that U.S. recognition was driven more by pragmatic strategy than the diaspora's advocacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
