Abstract

The article focuses on Babe’s Sports Bar, the first bar in Chicago, Illinois, dedicated exclusively to showing women’s sports. Co-founded by Nora McConnell-Johnson, a former middle school teacher and rugby player, and her business partner Torra Spillane, Babe’s opened in September 2025 to create an inclusive space for women’s sports fans, particularly welcoming to women and LGBTQ+ communities. The bar, named after athlete Mildred “Babe” Didrikson Zaharias, emphasizes community involvement, inclusivity, and respect, featuring donated memorabilia and a diverse drink menu. Babe’s reflects a growing national trend, joining over twenty similar women’s sports bars that have emerged alongside increased viewership and support for women’s sports.
