Abstract

The article focuses on the underdiagnosis and misdiagnosis of vitamin C deficiency, or scurvy, highlighting its persistent prevalence and clinical manifestations. A systematic review of 322 studies identified 63 cases of scurvy, primarily among hospitalized patients, with common risk factors including psychiatric disorders and restrictive diets. The most frequent skin manifestation was purpura, and nearly all patients improved with vitamin C supplementation. The review emphasizes the importance of recognizing scurvy in clinical settings, particularly in patients with joint pain, gingivitis, or anemia, and suggests measuring vitamin C levels for confirmation.
