Abstract
The article focuses on a legal ruling awarding over $1 million to the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Washington, D.C., after the far-right extremist group Proud Boys tore down and burned a Black Lives Matter banner during a 2020 protest. The judge also issued a five-year restraining order barring the Proud Boys and their leaders from approaching the church or making threats against it or its pastor. The lawsuit alleged violations of D.C. and federal law related to trespassing and destruction of religious property in a bias-related conspiracy. Proud Boys leader Henry "Enrique" Tarrio admitted to burning one banner and was previously convicted on related charges, while the group was also convicted of seditious conspiracy for the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.
