Abstract

The article examines the significant yet often overlooked impact of the Versailles Treaty of 1919 on East Asia, particularly focusing on Japan, China, Korea, and Mongolia. It challenges the prevailing Western narrative that links the treaty directly to the rise of Nazism and the attack on Pearl Harbor, presenting a collection of essays that offer diverse perspectives on the treaty's implications for these nations. The authors discuss Japan's strategic gains at Versailles, including control over former German possessions, and the subsequent rise of nationalism in China, as well as the lasting effects on Korean politics and Mongolian aspirations for nationhood. Overall, the volume argues that the events of 1919 have had enduring consequences that continue to shape regional dynamics today. [Extracted from the article]
