Abstract
The article reviews *The American Counterculture: A History of Hippies and Cultural Dissidents* by Damon R. Bach, which offers a comprehensive historiography of the mid-twentieth-century hippie movement. Bach challenges simplistic narratives by tracing the counterculture's evolution from cultural expression to political activism, emphasizing its fluid membership and shifting goals. The book draws on primary sources to explore well-known and lesser-known events, highlighting the movement's impact on American culture, including environmentalism and changing sexual attitudes. While well-organized and thoroughly researched, the work is noted to inadequately address the counterculture's interactions with other contemporary social movements, such as the contributions of trans women in Stonewall and the diversity within women's movements. The book raises important questions about the role of privilege, violence, and sustainability in alternative communities, offering a valuable resource for researchers studying the period and related subcultures.
