Abstract

This article explores the personal and artistic significance of Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s painting *The Torso of the Nude in the Sunlight* to the author, who reflects on its role as a symbolic guardian and representation of womanhood throughout her life. Juxtaposing this Impressionist work with Renaissance depictions of the Madonna and Child, the author examines themes of motherhood, identity, and the evolving portrayal of women from religious iconography to more naturalistic and joyful expressions. Through painting and writing, she grapples with the tension between idealized purity and lived experience, ultimately finding in Renoir’s nude a figure of enduring possibility and self-recognition. The article also touches on the author’s creative process in reinterpreting traditional female imagery to explore sorrow, resilience, and liberation.
