Abstract

Juliet B. Wiersema's book, "The History of a Periphery: The Spanish Colonial Cartography from Colombia's Pacific Lowlands," sheds light on the neglected colonial history of Colombia's Chocó region through the analysis of manuscript maps created between 1592 and 1819. These maps reveal the interactions between Spanish settlers, indigenous groups, and free people of African descent in the tropical zone of Chocó. Wiersema argues that studying manuscript maps provides a more comprehensive view of the Spanish empire by highlighting its periphery and documenting short-lived settlements and conditions absent from printed maps. The book, based on seven years of research, offers valuable insights for cartographers, historians, geographers, and anthropologists, making it accessible to a wide range of readers.
