Abstract
This article focuses on a 2-CD release featuring a 1960 Danish Radio broadcast of Carl Nielsen's Danish-language opera *Saul and David*, based on biblical stories from the book of Samuel and other psalms. The recording, part of the Thomas Jensen Legacy series honoring the Danish conductor Thomas Jensen, presents a shortened version of the opera with clear vocal performances but somewhat distant orchestral sound. The release also includes the first recording of a quasi-song cycle by Danish pianist and composer Helge Bonnen, setting 13 texts from Edgar Lee Masters's *Spoon River Anthology* in Danish translation. While no libretto is provided, the article notes the availability of the opera's libretto and other recordings online, and highlights the musical and dramatic qualities of Nielsen's work alongside Bonnen's varied musical moods reflecting the anthology's characters.
