Abstract

This article provides a detailed account of a riot that occurred in Indianapolis in 1866 during a visit by President Andrew Johnson and General Ulysses S. Grant. The crowd initially showed enthusiasm for Grant but became increasingly hostile towards Johnson. The situation escalated into violence, with fights and shots fired. Eventually, Grant was able to calm the crowd and deliver a speech. The riot reflected the deep divide in American culture and politics at the time. It also includes illustrations from Harper's Weekly depicting key moments in the impeachment process. [Extracted from the article]
