Abstract
Gautier had great admiration for Ingres, like Delacroix, in whom he saw the representation of rest and movement. Ingres seemed to him to embody a dream of time travel. Gautier also saw in Ingres a marginal artist, lost in his century, developing an ideal of rigor. It is surprising to note that Gautier, admirer of orientalist painters like Decamps and Marilhat, celebrates in Ingres the opposite of oriental sensuality. This will allow us to better understand the twists and turns of Gautier's artistic judgment, and the part played in his criticism by the systematic desire to go against the doxa.
