Abstract

The article focuses on the upcoming auction of a Patek Philippe 18-carat gold pocket watch owned by financier John Jacob Astor IV, one of the wealthiest passengers who died in the 1912 Titanic disaster. The watch, engraved with Astor’s monogram and originally sold by Tiffany & Co., will be auctioned by Freeman’s, America’s oldest auction house, in Chicago on April 22, with an estimated value of $300,000 to $500,000. The watch and a gold and sapphire pencil case were recovered from Astor’s body after the sinking and passed down through four generations before being consigned by the estate of Charlene Marshall. The watch includes authentication from Patek Philippe archives, linking it to both American luxury history and the Titanic tragedy. [Extracted from the article]
