Abstract

This article focuses on the intellectual and religious beliefs of Lady Jane Grey, emphasizing her role as a devoted Dissenter during the Tudor period whose thought has been comparatively overlooked. It highlights her early education, exposure to the New Learning influenced by Erasmus and Martin Luther, and her challenges to orthodox Christian metaphysics, particularly regarding transubstantiation, direct communication with God, and salvation by faith alone. The article situates Jane Grey alongside other prominent Tudor women like Katherine Parr and Anne Boleyn, noting her significant scholarly achievements despite her youth and brief reign. It argues for greater recognition of Jane Grey’s theological contributions within the context of the religious controversies and social changes of sixteenth-century England.
