Abstract

The article examines Ian McEwan's 2022 novel *Lessons*, focusing on its central character Roland Baines and his psychologically fraught erotic awakening, which parallels but diverges from Joseph Conrad's nostalgic portrayal of youth in *Youth: A Narrative, and Two Other Stories*. McEwan's novel intertwines Roland's personal trauma with broader historical and geopolitical events, invoking Conrad's themes of adventure and memory while contrasting Roland's morbid erotic fixation with Conrad's more innocent nostalgia. Additionally, the article discusses W. G. Sebald's engagement with Conrad's life and work, cautioning readers about some of Sebald's speculative claims. Finally, it highlights John Le Carré's *The Constant Gardener* as a modern narrative echoing Conrad's *Heart of Darkness*, portraying a quest against neocolonial corruption in Kenya through the protagonist Justin Quayle's pursuit of truth and justice.
