Abstract

FRONTLINE30 December 1939British and French troops toast the new year on the Maginot Line, a 280-mile (450km) defensive network on France's border with Germany. This is one of the first images showing British and French soldiers side by side in the Second World War. Troops from the British Expeditionary Force arrived at the Maginot Line in September 1939 and were involved in a flurry of construction, helping to extend the line and improve the fortifications. But the defences were largely irrelevant as the Wehrmacht violated the neutrality of Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands to avoid a direct assault.PHOTO (BLACK & WHITE) [Extracted from the article]
