Abstract
The article discusses the book "Land and Liberty: Henry George and the Crafting of Modern Liberalism" by Christopher William England. The book explores the ideas of Henry George, a thinker who has recently gained renewed interest, and his impact on liberal ideology. England argues that George's holistic worldview and his plan for land value taxation had a significant influence on the transformation of liberal ideology at the turn of the century. The book covers George's life, his disciples, and the major accomplishments of the post-George movement. While the analysis is incisive, the book's emphasis on relating George's movement to modern liberalism is both a strength and a weakness. Overall, the book is a valuable contribution to American political historiography. [Extracted from the article]
