Abstract
This article examines two Chinese xiqu (traditional opera) adaptations of Sophocles' Antigone—Hebei bangzi (Hebei clapper opera) Thebes City (2002) and jingju (Peking opera) Mingyue and Zihan (2015)—highlighting their distinct adaptive strategies. Thebes City employs a hybridization approach, blending Greek tragic themes with Chinese cultural elements such as Chu-period rituals, martial arts, and ghost scenes, while retaining key plot points and characters from the original play; this adaptation has enjoyed significant critical and popular success over nearly two decades. In contrast, Mingyue and Zihan represents an indigenization strategy, thoroughly sinicizing the story by relocating it to a fictional Chinese state, altering characters and plot substantially, but has seen limited professional staging and impact. The article underscores how these adaptations illustrate different modes of intercultural theatre in xiqu, emphasizing creativity and performability over strict fidelity, and how Thebes City's hybridization exemplifies a complex but fruitful balance of cultural diversity within Chinese operatic traditions.
