Abstract

The article focuses on the role of press management and deception in the lead-up to and aftermath of the Allied D-Day invasion of Normandy in 1944. It details how British and American military and political leaders, including Generals Eisenhower and Montgomery and Prime Minister Churchill, balanced strict censorship with strategic media engagement to maintain operational security and mislead German forces through Operation Fortitude. The press was integrated into the war effort as vetted correspondents were embedded with troops, while censorship controlled sensitive information to sustain public morale amid anxieties over casualties and slow progress, particularly around Caen. Reporting also addressed complex relations with the French population and the evolving public perception as the campaign progressed, culminating in the liberation of Paris and widespread optimism about the war's outcome.
