Abstract

This article reviews a three-disc set of original monaural soundtrack recordings by Italian composer Nino Rota from seven significant films made between 1956 and 1961, including works by directors Federico Fellini and Luchino Visconti. The collection features scores from films such as *War and Peace*, *Nights of Cabiria*, *La Dolce Vita*, *Rocco and His Brothers*, and *Boccaccio 70*, sourced from original LPs and EPs in the personal collection of producer Olivier Julien. While some early soundtracks exhibit audio limitations typical of late 1950s Italian cinema, the set offers a valuable representation of Rota's mid-career film music, highlighting his varied compositional style and contributions to Italian film history. The accompanying booklet provides track listings and a filmography, and most of the films are accessible via streaming platforms.
