Abstract

The article examines the parallels between Sophocles' *Oedipus Rex* and Gabriel García Márquez's *Chronicle of a Death Foretold*, highlighting how classical tragedy influences Márquez's narrative style and thematic exploration. It discusses the tragic elements present in both works, such as the concepts of peripeteia (reversal of fortune) and hamartia (tragic flaw), and how these contribute to the characters' fates within their respective societies. The article emphasizes the role of societal norms and collective complicity in the tragedies, illustrating how both authors use their narratives to reflect on the human condition and the inevitability of fate.
