Abstract

In 1816, the Rum Hospital opened in Sydney, Australia, funded through a unique arrangement involving a monopoly on rum imports. Despite its impressive structure, the hospital was initially seen as a last resort for criminals, the poor, and accident victims. Over time, efforts were made to improve conditions, including the establishment of the Sydney Infirmary and Dispensary, which eventually evolved into the Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital, the oldest working hospital in Australia.
