Abstract

The article examines the multifaceted roles of women during the Crusades, highlighting their involvement as promoters, patrons, propagandists, and occasional combatants within medieval Catholic Christendom. It details how noblewomen, such as Countess Matilda of Canossa and Queens Urraca of Castile and Teresa of Portugal, actively supported or led military efforts, while many other women participated through pilgrimage, financial support, estate management, or prayer. Despite social and physical constraints limiting direct combat roles, women's contributions were essential to the crusading movement's spiritual, logistical, and political dimensions. The article also discusses the spiritual motivations behind women's participation and the broader societal expectations that drew them into the crusading cause.
