Abstract

The article discusses the challenges and strategies involved in dating letters from the Vaux Family Papers, a collection from a prominent Philadelphia Quaker family, spanning from 1690 to 1996. The collection, which includes approximately ten thousand letters, is being meticulously processed at the American Philosophical Society Library. The author outlines various methods for dating undated letters, such as analyzing the context of related correspondence, utilizing historical calendars, examining location information, referencing family milestones, and considering historical context. These strategies are illustrated through examples from letters written by George Vaux X and Henry James Vaux to their mother, Mary James Vaux, during the 1930s to 1950s. [Extracted from the article]
