Abstract

The article focuses on the challenges historians face in accessing reliable sources about Tibet's recent history due to strict Chinese government controls on archives, interviews, and publications. It highlights the use of government-run newspapers from both within Tibet and Tibetan exile communities as alternative primary sources, despite their propagandistic nature and ideological constraints. By comparing Tibetan-language newspapers published in exile with Chinese state newspapers, researchers can trace shifts in political discourse, terminology, and narratives surrounding Tibet's status and identity. The article also discusses how digital humanities tools, such as text mining and topic modeling, assist scholars in analyzing these complex sources to uncover patterns, ideological shifts, and factional influences within Tibetan and Chinese historical narratives. This comparative and technologically aided approach offers a way to study Tibet's modern history amid restricted access to traditional archives and firsthand accounts.
