Abstract

The article critically examines the Canadian Reformers Robert Baldwin and Sir Louis-Hippolyte LaFontaine, challenging the portrayal of them as selfless leaders akin to Cincinnatus and George Washington. It highlights that a key motivation for these Reformers was gaining control over political patronage to replace aristocratic appointees with their own supporters, a common political practice of the era. Despite claims that Baldwin and LaFontaine were not office seekers, both accepted significant honors and positions, including Baldwin’s role as Solicitor General and LaFontaine’s appointment as Chief Justice and receipt of a hereditary Baronetcy. The article concludes that while they were influential statesmen, they engaged in typical political behaviors such as seeking patronage and honors.
