Abstract

SpaceX's Raptor engines are revolutionizing space launches by powering the company's giant Starship rocket. Unlike other manufacturers, SpaceX designs and constructs its own engines, allowing for customization. The Raptor engine is unique in its use of methane as fuel, which reduces soot buildup and eliminates the need for major refurbishment between flights. It also incorporates the efficient full-flow staged combustion design. The Raptor engine has undergone refinements, resulting in reduced weight and increased thrust. The ultimate goal of Starship is to take humans to Mars, and its features, such as the ability to refuel in space, reflect this long-term vision. Methane is chosen as fuel due to its potential synthesis on Mars. Methane is a compromise between kerosene-based fuel and liquid hydrogen, being cleaner and easier to handle. The Raptor engine operates by combining liquid oxygen and methane in the main combustion chamber, with the hot exhaust gases expelled through a specially designed nozzle.
