Abstract
CuriositiesSCIENCE & SOCIETY ● Earth peeks above the lunar horizon in this 1969 photo from Apollo 11, the first mission to put humans on the moon. Reactions to the historic feat reflected deep divisions within the United States at the time. While many people watched in awe, others expressed ambivalence or scorn given the ongoing fight against racial inequality and protests against the Vietnam War. Now, a new moonshot, also set against a backdrop of social unrest, is reminding us of space missions' power to unite humankind and bring our earthly problems into sharp relief (see Page 60). — Cassie MartinPHOTO (COLOR) [Extracted from the article]
