Abstract

The article focuses on the historical parallels between Grover Cleveland, the only U.S. president before Donald Trump to win non-consecutive terms, and Trump’s 2024 reelection. Cleveland, a Democrat known for his reformist stance and opposition to corruption, won the presidency in 1884, lost in 1888, and regained it in 1892. However, his second term saw economic crisis and policy decisions—such as adherence to a low tariff and the gold standard—that fractured his party and led to a Democratic collapse lasting over a decade. The article suggests that Cleveland’s divisive leadership and failure to unify his party offer a cautionary example for Republicans under a second Trump administration.
