Abstract
This review focuses on the Greek National Opera’s production of Offenbach’s *Les Contes d’Hoffmann*, directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski and conducted by former GNO music director Lukas Karytinos. The production, the opera’s Greek premiere, featured elaborate staging with giant screens and a complex story-within-a-story approach that divided audience opinion, as some found it confusing and unnecessarily extended the opera. Musically, the performances were praised, particularly British tenor Adam Smith and American soprano Nicole Chevalier in the first cast, and Greek soprano Vassiliki Karayanni and baritone Yannis Christopoulos in the second cast, with strong vocal and dramatic portrayals. The production’s sets and costumes were designed by Małgorzata Szczesniak, with choreography by Claude Bardouil and lighting and video design by Felice Ross and Denis Guéguin, respectively.
