Abstract
The article titled "Old Main" from the New York Archives provides a historical account of Sheldon Hall, located on the campus of the State University of New York (SUNY) at Oswego. Constructed in 1913, Sheldon Hall was originally known as Old Main and served as the university's only academic building until 1932. It was later renamed and dedicated to the school's founder, Dr. Edward A. Sheldon, in 1961. Dr. Sheldon, born in 1823, established the Orphan and Free School Association in Oswego to provide free education to local children. He implemented a teaching method influenced by Swiss education reformer Johann Pestalozzi, known as the Oswego Movement or object teaching, which emphasized interactive learning and observation of objects and events. The article also mentions the preservation and renovation efforts of Sheldon Hall, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [Extracted from the article]
