Abstract

The article examines whether the "drawing" of the Father in John 6:44 supports the Calvinist doctrine of irresistible grace, which holds that God irresistibly compels the elect to salvation. It analyzes the Greek verb helkuō, translated as "draw," showing that while it can mean a physical, forceful dragging (as with inanimate objects), it also has a non-physical, attractional sense when applied to people, implying persuasion rather than coercion. The article argues that in John 6:44, the Father's drawing is best understood as a non-coercive, persuasive drawing through teaching and the Word of God, consistent with the broader biblical context and Isaiah 54:13's imagery of God wooing His people. Consequently, John 6:44 does not substantiate the Calvinist view of irresistible grace, though it does not invalidate Calvinism as a whole.
