Abstract

A literary criticism of the novel "The Awakening," by Kate Chopin is presented. It examines the significant gaps of the unsaid and the inexpressible in Chopin's work in relation to the specific silence of female desire during the late 19th century, the significance of this silence in Lacanian thought, and the inner phenomena experienced by the protagonist Edna Pontellier.
