Abstract

Archaeological excavations in northern Greece have revealed new insights into the world that shaped Alexander the Great. The city of Pella, the capital of ancient Macedonia, has been extensively excavated, uncovering a city that was on par with other great cities of the time. The Pella Urban Dynamics Project aims to further explore the city's history and its connections to other cities. Additionally, the project has begun investigating Pella's royal palace, where Alexander likely grew up. These discoveries are transforming scholars' understanding of Alexander's early life in Macedonia. Furthermore, a large tomb adorned with murals depicting a drinking party has been discovered near the Greek village of Agios Athanasios. Scholars believe that the men depicted in the murals were either royal pages or new recruits to the army, providing valuable insight into the lives of the generation that expanded Macedonian control under Alexander's leadership.
