Abstract

This article focuses on Robert Schumann’s piano work *Faschingsschwank aus Wien* (Carnival Jest from Vienna), Op. 26, composed during his 1838–39 stay in Vienna. It discusses the piece’s lighter, more accessible style compared to Schumann’s earlier works, its structure across five movements, and its historical context, including the inclusion of the forbidden French anthem *La Marseillaise* as a musical jest. The article also surveys notable recordings from 1934 to the present by prominent pianists such as Magda Tagliaferro, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, Sviatoslav Richter, and Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, highlighting interpretive differences and performance qualities. It concludes by recommending several recordings for further study without designating a definitive “best” version.
