Abstract
The article focuses on the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender by representatives of the Empire of Japan aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. This event marked the formal end of World War II following Emperor Hirohito's announcement of Japan's unconditional surrender on August 15, 1945, after he successfully thwarted a military coup. The USS Missouri was notable for flying the same flag that had been used during Commodore Matthew Perry's expeditions to Japan in 1853. Despite the surrender, some Japanese soldiers continued to hold out, with the last known holdout, Private Teruo Nakamura, surrendering in 1974. [Extracted from the article]
