Abstract

The article focuses on how Utagawa Kuninaga imagined the Pyramids of Giza in early nineteenth-century Japan by blending secondhand European knowledge with Japanese artistic conventions during the sakoku era. Topics include the adaptation of Western linear perspective in uki-e prints, the circulation of European and Jesuit sources in East Asia, and the creative reconstruction of ancient wonders through cross-cultural exchange.
