Abstract

The article focuses on the conviction and sentencing of Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison by Brazil's Supreme Court for attempting a coup to remain in power after losing the 2022 election. Bolsonaro was found guilty on five counts, including attempting a coup, participating in an armed criminal organization, and attempting to abolish democratic rule, stemming from actions between 2021 and 2023, including the January 8, 2023, attack on government buildings. The ruling has deepened political polarization in Brazil and elicited reactions from international figures such as former U.S. President Donald Trump and U.S. officials who criticized the conviction as political persecution. Bolsonaro remains under house arrest and plans to appeal the verdict, while his political future remains uncertain amid an eight-year ban from public office.
