Abstract

The article focuses on the increasing seismic pressure along the Tintina fault, a 1,000 km (620 mi.) geological formation extending from Canada's Yukon Territory to Alaska. A recent study reveals that although the fault has been quiet for the past 12,000 years, it has accumulated significant strain that could result in a major earthquake exceeding magnitude 7.5. Using high-resolution imagery and computer modeling, researchers identified geological evidence of multiple large earthquakes in the Quaternary Period but no major activity during the Holocene Epoch. The potential quake poses risks to communities like Dawson City and regional infrastructure, highlighting the importance of preparedness despite the uncertainty of when the fault might rupture.
