Abstract
The article focuses on the recent publication of the "Handbook of Roman Private Law," which aims to provide a comprehensive examination of the formation and practice of Roman private law, a field traditionally viewed as stagnant. The handbook, edited by six scholars and comprising three volumes with contributions from 65 authors, seeks to bridge the gap between ancient history and legal studies by offering a detailed exploration of legal principles, procedures, and the socio-legal context of Roman law from the Republic to Justinian times. The reviewer highlights the innovative approach of emphasizing legal actions as foundational to understanding Roman law, while also noting the challenges faced by scholars from different disciplines in engaging with this complex legal tradition.
