Abstract
The article reviews "The Spice Ports: Mapping the Origins of Global Sea Trade," which explores the histories of twelve key port cities that played significant roles in the spice trade. The cities discussed include Venice, Alexandria, Goa, Lisbon, Malacca, Amsterdam, Batavia, Cape Town, Bombay, London, New York, and Singapore, detailing their rise in long-distance trade and commerce. While the book is richly illustrated and accessible, it is noted that some historical details are superficial, and there are minor inaccuracies. The review suggests that the book, despite its shortcomings, offers a broad overview of Asian trade history and cartography, appealing to both map collectors and those new to the subject.
