Abstract

The article examines how Spain transitioned from being under a fascist regime to becoming one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. Following Francisco Franco's death in 1975, Spain experienced significant economic growth, termed the 'Spanish miracle,' which spurred a dramatic increase in tourism from fewer than one million visitors in 1950 to over 30 million by 1975. The regime actively promoted tourism as a means of economic development and international image management, utilizing propaganda and censorship to shape tourists' perceptions. Despite the allure of Spain's beaches and culture, visitors often encountered the authoritarian presence of the Guardia Civil, highlighting the complex relationship between tourism and the political climate of the time. Today, Spain's tourism industry continues to evoke mixed sentiments, with recent protests against its impact on local communities. [Extracted from the article]
