Abstract

This article focuses on the 1929 silent film *Pandora's Box*, directed by G. W. Pabst and starring Louise Brooks as Lulu, adapted from Frank Wedekind's plays *Erdgeist* (Earth Spirit) and *Die Büchse der Pandora* (Pandora's Box). The Criterion Collection's new Blu-ray release presents a digitally restored version assembled from multiple international prints, offering a slightly different cut than previous editions. The film's plot centers on Lulu, a provocative woman whose relationships lead to tragedy amid themes of sexuality, power, and social decay in Weimar Germany. Despite initial critical disdain in the United States and censorship challenges, *Pandora's Box* has since become a cult classic largely due to Brooks's iconic performance, with ongoing scholarly debate about the film's potential anti-Semitic imagery and its cultural significance within the context of late 1920s German cinema.
