Abstract
The article discusses the political screening campaign known as the Fragebogen that was implemented by the Allies in postwar Germany to purge Nazi ideology. The study challenges the prevailing view that the campaign was a failure and provides a detailed examination of the origins and implementation of the Fragebogen. It argues that the Fragebogen had a significant impact in disrupting the careers of former Nazis and eliciting emotional responses from the general population. The article also highlights the personal writings submitted with the Fragebogen, which offer insight into the mindset of Germans during the immediate postwar years. The study avoids making judgments on the success or failure of denazification and emphasizes the importance of community rejection of the Nazi regime. It suggests that further research is needed to explore the legacy of denazification, particularly in the Soviet zone and in relation to women's experiences. [Extracted from the article]
