Abstract

The article focuses on the research of 17th-century Netherlandish miniature portraits featuring costumed mica overlays, which were primarily female portraits that reflect various social and economic identities. Funded by a grant from the Decorative Arts Trust, the research revealed over 100 sets of these miniatures, which have been largely overlooked in scholarly discourse. The study emphasizes how changing a sitter's costume alters their identity, showcasing the interplay between material culture and social roles during the Dutch Republic's period of wealth and cultural exchange. The miniatures serve as interactive explorations of identity, inviting viewers to engage with diverse cultural representations and social hierarchies. Further research is needed to understand their origins and the implications of their playful nature. [Extracted from the article]
