Abstract

This article focuses on the Alinde Quintet, a Czech wind quintet formed after winning the 2019 Bucharest International Wind Quintet Competition, and their 2024 debut recording featuring works by Eastern European composers Pavel Haas, Jan Novak, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Peteris Vasks. The program reflects the composers' historical and political contexts, including Haas’s tragic fate during the Holocaust, Novak’s postwar experiences under Communist rule, Shostakovich’s struggles with Soviet authorities, and Vasks’s personal mourning expressed through avant-garde and folk elements. The review highlights the ensemble’s strong performances, particularly of Haas, Novak, and Vasks, while noting that the Shostakovich arrangement by Mark Popkin is less compelling compared to other adaptations.
