Abstract

The article focuses on the life, legacy, and commemoration of Florence Nightingale, a pioneering nurse born in 1820 in Florence, Italy, to a wealthy English family. Known as the "Lady with the Lamp," she challenged Victorian norms by pursuing nursing, a profession then considered lowly, and gained recognition for her work during the Crimean War at the military hospital in Scutari. Nightingale’s contributions to nursing and public health were honored through various memorials, including a £2 coin issued by Great Britain in 2010 to mark the centenary of her death, and the annual International Nurses Day celebrated on her birthday, May 12. She continued to influence nursing through writing and advocacy until her death in 1910, choosing to be buried in St. Margaret’s Church rather than Westminster Abbey.
