Abstract
This article discusses the life of Thomas Garvine, a Scottish surgeon who worked in China during the 18th century. Garvine was part of a Russian mission to China and arrived in Beijing in 1716. He was honored and respected by the Chinese emperor and the nobility, and his medical expertise was highly valued. Garvine eventually requested to return home and was rewarded with silver, silk fabrics, and an escort back to Russia. The article also examines a portrait of Garvine that contains texts in Manchu, Chinese, and Latin, providing further insights into his time in China. [Extracted from the article]
