Abstract

The article features 18th-century African American woman poet Phillis Wheatley. Topics discussed include Wheatley's encounter with elite white dignitaries while presenting her written offerings patterned in the style of celebrated writers such as Alexander Pope and Thomas Gray in 1761, andtthe success of Wheatley to overcome the boundaries and obstacles of her position as a slave and a woman and managed to situate herself in this field of discursive power.
