Abstract
The article explores the historical development of Swahili as a lingua franca in East Africa, emphasizing its significance in the independence movement led by Julius Nyerere and the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU). Nyerere's advocacy for Swahili, particularly during the fight for independence and in the establishment of Tanzanian identity, was pivotal in its rise as a national language. The article also highlights Swahili's evolution from a regional language to a global one, now spoken by over 200 million people and recognized as an official language in several East African countries. Additionally, it discusses the language's role in fostering unity and nation-building in Tanzania, contrasting its status with that in neighboring Kenya. [Extracted from the article]
