Transport Infrastructure, Intra-Regional Inequality and Urban-Rural Divide: Evidence From China's High-Speed Rail Construction.

Abstract

This article examines the impact of high-speed rail (HSR) operation on intra-regional inequality, specifically the urban-rural income gap, in China from 2007 to 2018. Using panel data at the prefecture-city level and a Difference-in-Differences (DID) model, the study finds that HSR operation has widened the urban-rural income gap by promoting the agglomeration of population, financial capital, and economic activities in urban areas near HSR stations. This polarization effect is more pronounced in small and less developed cities, while in large and developed cities, a diffusion effect mitigates the widening gap. The research identifies these mechanisms through mediation analysis and confirms the robustness of results via instrumental variable regression, propensity score matching, placebo tests, and dynamic DID models.
